At church today, I gave a lesson in Elders Quorum, mostly based off President Eyring’s talk “O Remember, Remember” from October 2007 general conference.
After we read a bit of his talk (especially the part that reads “…I heard in my mind ‘I’m not giving you these experiences for yourself. Write them down’…find ways to recognize and remember God’s kindness “) we had 5 minutes to write down some important life experiences or things we had learned that we’d like our children snd grandchildren to have.
So I wondered “how have I seen the hand of God in my life today?” And I thought I saw it through that day’s lesson coming together: I had previously been wondering what to teach the guys (the first Sunday lesson usually being mine to teach and having no assigned topic). And somehow I felt the topic of the importance of keeping a journal would be good. That was actually why I started this blog: I wanted to be 100% hypocritical and actually be doing some of what I’d be teaching (and I’ve recently been pretty bad at keeping a journal). (I also started this blog with the plan to one day write FamilySearch integration so that each blog post will become a family tree “memory” about myself. This way my memories will be preserved by the very organization that’s already doing that for the currently-deceased).
Anyways, these were my brief thoughts that I wrote:
The lesson I have today was based on elder eyring’s talk “o remember, remember” from 2007.
In it he invites us to record our important life experiences and testimony-building experiences because “I’m not giving you these experiences for yourself. Write them down”.
How did I recall this lesson or realize it’s what we needed? An idea popped into my head, I feel it was from the spirit.
How did I realize a good introductory activity? (Asking them for funny experiences, then life lessons, then “how they’ve seen the hand of the lord in their lives?” Again the idea just came to me, and I think it was good so it was from the spirit. I’ve given lessons based on my ideas and they’re nowhere near as good)
